Start with the heaviest real load
Determine the heaviest pallet or attachment your operation will actually lift, then document its load center. Forklift capacity is rated under specific conditions. A long or unusually shaped load moves the center of gravity forward and can reduce the truck’s effective capacity.
Attachments can also change capacity. If you use clamps, fork positioners or other equipment, the dealer needs that information before recommending a model.
Measure maximum lift height and lowered mast height
Maximum fork height must reach the highest rack position with enough clearance to place and retrieve the pallet safely. However, buyers also need the collapsed mast height. A forklift that reaches the top rack but cannot pass through a doorway, trailer or low-clearance area is the wrong truck.
- Measure the highest rack beam and required fork height.
- Measure every doorway and overhead obstruction on the travel route.
- Confirm whether the truck will enter trailers or containers.
- Allow for sprinklers, lighting and other building clearances.
Choose cushion or pneumatic-style tires
Cushion-tire electric forklifts are compact and work well on smooth indoor floors. Pneumatic-style tires offer more ground clearance and are better suited to rough surfaces, dock approaches and mixed indoor-outdoor work.
Do not select tires from appearance alone. Inspect expansion joints, ramps, broken pavement and dock plates across the complete route.
Aisle width determines the truck configuration
Measure the clear aisle, not merely the distance between rack uprights. Pallet overhang, guards and building columns reduce usable maneuvering space.

Match the lithium battery to the duty cycle
Lithium equipment supports fast and opportunity charging, but the battery and charger still need to match the workload. Document operating hours, number of shifts, travel distance, lift cycles and available break periods.

- What input voltage and electrical service does the charger require?
- Where will the charging area be located?
- Can the truck charge during breaks without interrupting operations?
- What runtime is expected under the actual lift and travel cycle?

Never plan charging from a brochure estimate alone. Work intensity, temperature, travel and lift height all affect energy use.
Evaluate ergonomics and visibility
Operators interact with the truck for hours. Check step height, seat adjustment, steering effort, control placement, mast visibility and entry clearance. A truck that is uncomfortable or difficult to see through can slow work and encourage poor operating habits.
Plan for service before purchasing
Downtime costs more than the difference between two purchase quotes. Confirm parts availability, diagnostic support, warranty coverage and who provides service in your territory.

When an electric pallet jack or stacker is enough
Not every operation needs a counterbalance forklift. For horizontal pallet movement, an electric pallet jack may be more efficient and less expensive. When loads need moderate vertical lift in a compact area, an electric pallet stacker may fit the application.
