An electric pallet jack should be selected for the pallets, routes and work cycle it will actually face—not simply for the largest capacity number on the specification sheet. The right truck fits the pallet entry, turns within the aisle, completes the shift with an appropriate battery plan and gives the operator clear, predictable controls.
Start with the load and pallet
Document the maximum loaded pallet weight, the pallet style and the direction from which the forks enter. Capacity is a rated limit, not a target. Load distribution, pallet condition, fork support and workplace conditions all affect safe handling.

Match fork dimensions to your pallets
Fork length and width must match the pallet type used in your facility. Forks that are too short may not support the load correctly; forks that are too long can extend beyond the pallet and create clearance problems. Measure actual pallets and openings rather than relying on a general label such as “standard pallet.”
Choose a battery and charging plan
Lithium-powered pallet trucks are popular because they can offer low routine maintenance, fast charging and opportunity charging between tasks. The best battery still depends on shift length, travel distance, charger access and operating temperature.
- Single-shift, intermittent use: confirm the truck can complete normal work without forcing deep discharge.
- Multi-shift use: plan charging windows and confirm whether opportunity charging is supported.
- Cold or demanding environments: verify the manufacturer's approved temperature range and configuration.
- Built-in charger: confirm the facility has the correct electrical supply where the truck will be parked.
Evaluate maneuverability and controls
In a crowded stockroom or delivery area, turning radius and tiller operation may matter as much as capacity. Look for a control layout that is easy to understand, an emergency reverse function, horn, clear battery indication and a low-speed mode where offered. A vertical-tiller or “pinwheel” operating feature can reduce the space needed for certain tight turns, but it must be used exactly as the manufacturer directs.
Account for the complete operating environment
Measure aisles, doorways, dock transitions and staging zones. Note ramps or grades and confirm that the intended model is approved for them. Review wheel materials for floor type and debris exposure. Make sure the selected truck can be serviced and that replacement wear parts are available.
